04.05.01:	No, I'm not dead Sorry for the looong time since last update. The computer the backend program for this site resided on (UltraMagnus) no longer exists (parts of it have been absorbed into two semi-new systems (Shockwave and Cyclonus), and other parts await my getting started on a new linux computer (TeletranOne). Anyone see a pattern? I love naming computers.) Anyway, the actual job of the upgrade took significantly longer than expected (including a two-week delay in getting a replacement processor when the online store sent me 300mhz fewer than I had ordered), and I found out at an unfortunate stage that the backend program didn't make the move to a new system nearly as gracefully as I thought I had designed it to do. Anyway, I've just now gotten the program running happily again, so I thought I'd post a note to say that things are underway again. I have a huge pile of votes to parse now, which will take a bit of time. Perhaps I'll get it done tonight, or perhaps it will have to wait until the weekend, depending on how disturbing my homework load looks.

02.25.01:	Recovered, more or less Ok, voting should be totally functional now. Please mail me if you encounter any problems. Seems @Home decided to make ip assignment dynamic (as well as putting all the local ips and the gateway in a totally different block), very soon after I set things up that relied on my ip being static. Through some very appreciated external aid, though, I've got a semi-static way to refer to my local machine (thanks, Jima, mighty evil one), so things should run without a hitch now. Time will tell. Note that I haven't updated the scores this time, though, so if you submitted a vote successfully earlier this week, I've got it and will process it shortly.
02.23.01:	Downtime continuing I'm sure anyone trying to cast votes in the last 36 hours or so has gotten some interesting errors. @Home has redesigned some of their internal structure, which knocked me off the net for a while. I've adapted, though, (and learned a bit about dhcp under linux), so now I'm back online. However, until I get a chance to tweak the backend program to fix part of the cgi address, voting's going to be impossible. Give me a few days, I'll get it recovered. It's amazing how just a day without total connectivity can be so overwhelmingly frustrating.

There have been a LOT of borderline (genre-wise) books submitted these last few weeks (I get the feeling some people are working on seeing how far the line blurs in my perception, heh), and this week a lot of them fell out of the categories completely. At this point I'm really not interested in incorporating horror in it's totality. However, all I need is a reasonable doubt that a book has significant fantasy/science fiction elements to add it to the listing on those grounds. I didn't see such elements in a lot of them this time, but feel free to press the case and send me an email if you feel strongly that one of the rejected books does contain a reasonable sf/f bent. I may not change my mind, but I'll at least consider it. On another note, interestingly enough there have been a large number of books that I would consider to fall into a feminist/women's empowerment type of category before they fell into science fiction or fantasy submitted lately. No particular reason I mention this, just thought it was kind of interesting. The type of books that get submitted seem to come in in groupings, I guess as people find run across this page and tell friends who share the same reading interests.

Now all votes should be dumped straight to my system as textfiles, avoiding mail entirely. Of course, @home doesn't allow homemade cgi, so I have to access it remotely from another server, adding a level of complexity, but hopefully that won't cause problems. If anything wierd happens, send me a message about it so I can work out the kinks.
